Hytera DMR System Helps Euro 2012 Run Smoothly in Poznan

Background

The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred as Euro 2012, kicked off on June 9, 2012. It was hosted by Poland and Ukraine and played across eight venues, four in each host country, five of which were newly built and opened in advance of the tournament. The remaining three stadiums (in Kiev, Poznan and Kharkov) underwent major renovations in order to meet UEFA's infrastructure standards.

Customer Demands

The Municipal Stadium Poznan, in the city of Poznan, was one of the four venues in Poland chosen to host some of the games. Originally built in 1968, the Municipal Stadium Poznan is the home ground of two Polish football clubs – Lech Poznan and Warta Poznan. From 2003 to 2010, the stadium underwent a thorough reconstruction to prepare for Euro 2012 and reopened on 20 September 2010. Hosting 43,000 audiences, the efficient communication and coordination among stadium staff is a vital part in ensuring smooth stadium management. To ensure that the three matches (Italy vs. Ireland, Ireland vs. Croatia, Croatia vs. Italy) ran smoothly, the operator of Municipal Stadium Poznan decided to upgrade their communication system early in 2012.

Solutions

Alfa Radio, Hytera dealer in Poland, delivered 132 PD70X, 10 PD78X DMR handheld radios, 2 RD98X DMR Repeaters together with Hytera dispatch system to upgrade the communication system of Poznan Stadium. Taking into account the complex steel and concrete architecture of the stadium, the equipment and RF solution was designed to realize full coverage effective communication in and around the stadium. Moreover, the stadium was completely covered by a roof, which increased echoes from the cheers of fans during the matches. In order to combat the increased noise levels, Hytera offered specified earpieces with microphones to the staff, enabling them to have clear communication among the surging cheers.

Benefits

The Municipal Stadium Poznan’s DMR communication system was much satisfying in the whole three Group C matches played in the stadium for its reliability and versatile functions.

Voice dispatching was available for operator directors in the control centre to all the staff via the Hytera dispatch system. Moreover, with Hytera’s flexible grouping function, staff in different working groups could access group communication without causing interference to other talk groups.

More powerful security functions like Man Down further enhanced emergency handling capabilities for operators. With the advanced digital communication solution, the three matches were held successfully. The system will be continued to be used in the stadium for daily operations and events held at the venue, including all the home matches of Lech Poznan and Warta Poznan.
