Background

Sydney Zoo is located 38 km west of the Sydney central business district. It occupies a 16.5-hectare (41-acre) site. The privately-owned zoo is a new attraction, which opened in December 2019. It contains 110 species of animal and is forecasted to receive an estimated 800,000 visitors a year.

For its communication system, Sydney Zoo worked with D2N Technology Solutions, a Hytera premium partner in Australia. D2N are experts in providing communication solutions for the events and stadium industry in Australia. As the zoo was a new business it was reluctant to invest in a communication system until it was properly up and running and generating good revenue.

As a result, D2N provided a solution based on a rental contract. After running successfully for a year, Sydney Zoo was about to sign a purchase deal, but this was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the deal to invest in a permanent communications solution was signed in mid-2020.

The Challenge

The main challenge was to find a solution that provided consistent quality coverage across the whole of the large 16.5 hectares (41 acres) site, including good in-building coverage. In addition, a wide variety of people needed to use the kit ranging from management, safety, catering, animal keepers, vets, drivers and grounds maintenance people. The right devices and feature applications had to be tailored to the individual needs of the users and their job functionalities.

The Solution

The brief was to have eight channels covering the entire site including inside enclosures that were constructed out of both steel and concrete, food preparation areas and within the animal housing enclosures. The zoo started off with 40 radios and this figure grew to 80 by the time the zoo was completed and opened for business.

As part of the rental agreement, D2N initially provided the zoo with Hytera PD462 digital radios operating in simplex mode. Once the zoo signed on to purchase a system, D2N installed four RD982 Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) repeaters with combining and multi-coupling hardware to provide eight DMR repeater channels.

For accessories the zoo staff are using a mixture of remote speaker microphones (RSMs), ES-02 earbud and EH-02 swivel style earpiece microphones.

The installation was fairly straight forward, as the repeater install location was easy to access and it required only a short climb onto the roof for the antenna placement. The location is in the centre of the zoo at the rear making it perfect for distributing the RF coverage across the whole site.

The Results

The feedback from the customer has been excellent with no complaints received at all. The zoo is very happy with both the coverage and with the audio quality of the Hytera radio system.
