In the heart of the remote and rugged Rhodope Mountains in Southern Bulgaria, an independent film company embarked on an ambitious project to film a survival reality show. Set against the breathtaking, yet challenging mountainous terrain, the show required a robust communication system to ensure the safety and coordination of the crew and participants. Hytera, in partnership with our trusted distributor Integra-A Ltd., successfully delivered and installed a multi-site IP connected DMR Tier II radio system to meet these demands.

The Rhodope Mountains, known for their stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, presents a unique set of challenges for any large-scale project. The area is characterised by its rugged terrain, dense forests, and lack of modern infrastructure; making it an ideal but demanding location for a survival reality show. The film crew needed a reliable communication system to navigate these challenges and ensure the safety and efficiency of their operations.
The project presented several significant challenges. The remote location in the Rhodope Mountains meant there was no existing infrastructure for power or communication. The equipment had to be transported over difficult terrain, often requiring technicians to carry heavy loads on foot due to impassable roads.
Additionally, adverse weather conditions, including rain and fog, further complicated the installation process. The installation of solar panels, the generators, and the waterproof racks for the repeaters took a week. Additionally, custom-made radio towers had to be transported and installed using winches, adding to the complexity of the project.
Integra-A Limited rose to the challenge by delivering and installing a robust Hytera DMR radio network. The system included:
The installation process, which began in early May 2024, involved setting up 15m radio towers, antenna systems, and ensuring the proper functioning of the entire network. The combination of petrol generators and solar panels with batteries provided a reliable and autonomous power supply, ensuring continuous operation even in the absence of traditional power sources.
The successful deployment of the Hytera DMR Tier II network provided reliable and secure communication for the film crew throughout the shooting of the reality show. Key outcomes included:
The project not only met the immediate needs of the film production but also demonstrated the capability of Hytera DMR systems to operate in challenging environments.
Development Looking ahead, the Mountain Rescue Service's DMR radio system, which relies on similar technology, will continue to expand with additional repeaters and radio stations. This system is crucial for the safety and efficiency of rescue operations in areas without GSM coverage. Hytera is proud to support these efforts, contributing to the safety and success of mountain rescue operations.
