Background

Founded in 1834, Wake Forest University is a private institution of higher learning located in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Situated on 340 acres, the Reynolda campus is the university's main campus which houses the undergraduate colleges, three of the four graduate schools, and half the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Two interlinked quads are separated by the main administrative building, and hold residential buildings, a U.S. Post Office branch, a fast-food restaurant, several retail stores, and a chapel. The university also has its own police department dedicated to providing a safe, secure educational and working environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

In the early 1960s, certain buildings on the campus were modified to civil defense specifications, with some walls as thick as twenty-two inches. When the university was looking to upgrade its radio communications system, building penetration was one of the major concerns. In addition, they wanted a system that could provide additional channels for expanded coverage while eliminating the need for a transmitter combiner.

The Solution

  • hytera-image

Wake Forest opted for Hytera's PD7 Series of digital radios, providing PD782 radios for all campus law enforcement officers and security officers. PD702 radios for the reserve officers and security officers. PD702 radios were selected for the Campus Crisis Management Team for managing any on campus emergency. Built to the DMR Standard and rich with features for both voice and data communications, the radios deliver superior coverage and penetration.

The RD982 DMR repeater supports network interconnect via the IP port to form a private radio network, allowing wide area coverage to meet dispersed locations data and voice communications.

The BWC solution was needed to capture video evidence, so the footage could be used to review incidents. BOC also wanted to deploy BWCs at ports throughout the Philippine archipelago to enhance its monitoring activities.

Features

Superior Voice
With the adoption of the AGC technology in combination with the application of narrowband codec and digital error correction technologies, The PD7 Series radios are capable of ensuring your voice is clear and crisp even in noisy environments or at the edge of the coverage area.

Higher Spectrum Efficiency, Higher Channel Capacity
The TDMA technology allows twice the channels based on the same spectrum resource. This relieves the stress of increasing shortage in spectrum resource.

Multifaceted Features
In addition to conventional communication services, the PD7 Series radios are capable of Text Message, Scan, Emergency, Man Down (optional), Vibration, Auto Registration, High-speed Data Transmission, Lone Worker, Radio Check, Remote Monitor, Call Alert, Radio Enable, and Radio Disable.

Emergency Button
The PD7 Series radios allow for a user to signal an emergency situation by holding the dedicated emergency top key. The emergency signal can be programmed to be audible or silent and will be sent to the radio(s) that have been set to receive it.

50W High Power
Maximum repeating power of 50W, and thus increasing the system coverage with less setup equipment.

System Monitoring & Control
Hytera's RDAC software allows for the monitoring and control of the system from a remote location. The channel change can be performed either via RDAC PC tools, via the repeater's front panel channel knob and via the channel steering from the repeater's rear port.

The Results

The move to digital technology has allowed the university to expand the entire range of the system, providing superior coverage inside the buildings, as well as off campus. Enhanced features, such as unit identification and an emergency activation button, allow security personnel to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently. The PD7 Series radios, along with the RD98X repeater, provide crisp, clear communications that result in increased protection and security for both officers and the public.
