In 2006, the Emirate of Qatar on the Persian Gulf was the host for the Asian Games, an Olympic-level competition for the countries in the Asian region. For this major sporting event in which more than 10,500 athletes took part, Hytera integrated a secure TETRA communication system for the organisers and the security forces.
After the Asian Games, the mobile network operator Qtel(renamed to Ooredoo in 2013) engaged Hytera to expand the existing TETRA mobile radio system. Ooredoo wanted to expand the use of the TETRA mobile radio system by offering voice and data services to businesses and organisations in Qatar, looking for a secure two-way radio service. This is the world's first nationwide TETRA mobile radio system to be used commercially, rather than specifically for public safety. The network now has over 27,000 registered subscribers and 250 customers.
