Hytera PoC solution extends coverage to remote sites in South Africa for private security group

South Africa’s iMvula Group provides security services at over 2,000 sites scattered across the country. However, its existing DMR network struggled to reach some of the more remote locations. Hytera distributor Altron Nexus implemented a Hytera HyTalk PoC solution to augment the DMR network and extend coverage in a very cost-effective way to all the sites.

Challenge

Extend radio coverage to remote locations
iMvula had previously implemented a Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) two-way radio solution based on repeaters to provide and extend coverage. However, the radio network struggled to deliver adequate coverage in remote locations, so this was a huge challenge. iMvula decided it needed to find a communications solution that would complement its DMR network by extending coverage even to the remotest locations where it was providing security services.

Solutions

Hytera distributor Altron Nexus (AN) has provided iMvula with the majority of its mission critical communication requirements to date, so the Group asked it to come up with a solution. Altron Nexus recommended using Hytera’s HyTalk Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) platform along with Hytera PNC370 PoC terminals.

PoC provides all the benefits of two-way radio systems such as instant PTT individual, group and emergency communications, but it operates over existing public mobile phone networks, rather than its own private infrastructure. This helped to minimise the company’s investment, while maximising its return in terms of flexibility, coverage and added radio functionality.

The Hytera PoC solution easily met the coverage requirements, while the HyTalk management platform provides integration with PoC hand portable terminals, cellular mobile phones, body worn cameras (BWCs), other Android-based devices and dispatcher software.

Altron Nexus provided iMvula with 1,500 Hytera devices, of which 90% are PNC370 PoC portable terminals and 10% are DMR terminals. This allows for seamless communications over 2G/3G/4G/WiFi network of mobile network operator Vodacom.
