Challenge

Radio communications are absolutely essential for a taxi company to dispatch drivers to passengers. However, the company relied on a traditional analog two-way radio system with just one repeater for its communications. But the drawbacks of the aging analog radio system were impacting the company’s efficiency and quality of service.
For a start, the analog system suffered from poor signal quality and it was not powerful enough to cover the entire Davao Region. Furthermore, the additional radio components such as antennas for the base radios in the taxis, the cables, and the PTT microphones only increased the operational costs, as these components suered from continual wear and tear and had to be regularly replaced.
Another handicap was the inability of dispatchers to easily locate the taxicabs. As a taxi service company, it is of utmost importance for Krizia to be able to locate the whereabouts of its taxis at all times. The dispatcher must be able to identify the exact location of both the customer and the nearest available taxi in the area as soon as possible in order to satisfy the customer’s needs. This feature is not possible using traditional analog communication systems. Furthermore, identifying the exact location of the customer and the taxi driver provides additional safety for both parties.
Krizia Taxi was also finding that traditional analog radios systems are difficult to maintain. Installing analog repeaters has proven to be very expensive for the company, since its area of operation covers more than 20 million square kilometers of land, including mountainous terrain which blocks the repeater signal. Finally, maintaining these systems requires the hiring of additional manpower such as climbers and riggers, among others.

Solutions

After carefully studying the possible options for replacing the analog two-way radio system, it was decided that Hytera PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular) technology would provide the best solution for the Krizia Taxi Company's communication problem.
PoC provides nationwide coverage using existing mobile phone telecommunication networks and local Wi-Fi systems. This ensures coverage across the whole of Krizia Taxi’s area of operations and considerably reduces costs, as no expensive new radio infrastructure needs to be installed.
As well as supporting traditional two-way radio style instant PTT group, individual, broadcast and emergency calling, the PoC solution also provides a wide variety of additional applications required by Krizia Taxi Company, such as real-time location services and tracking, and call recording and logging.
Hytera provided an end-to-end PoC solution, including its HyTalk PoC management platform and software applications, which make it easy to monitor, manage and troubleshoot the network and radio fleet. Hytera also supplied its PNC360S and PNC380 hand portable PoC radio terminals.
