Background

Established in 1972, Palmer Trinity School is an Episcopal Middle and Upper School located in Palmetto Bay, an area south of downtown Miami, Florida. The school's curriculum is based on a program that stresses diversity, personal growth, inquiry-based thinking, and global citizenship. Palmer Trinity offers an extensive academic program, and students are encouraged to use their talents in the service of others with an emphasis on community service.

Recent renovations and improvements in campus planning prompted school officials to review their current radio communication system. The analog system in use at that time did not provide adequate coverage across the school's campus, performed poorly, and was unreliable.

The Challenge

  • hytera-image

After receiving a recommendation from a client of Reliable Two-Way, the local Hytera dealer, administrators at Palmer Trinity School decided to switch to Hytera PD56X DMR portable radios. The radios provide with enhanced performance and are equipped with features suited to both emergency situations, as well as day-to-operations.

The Hytera system includes patented pseudotrunking technology which maximizes the channel usage and allows multiple groups to talk at the same time. The high capacity Li-Ion battery provides extended battery life which could last a full work day.

As part of the modernization program, the Bureau wanted to upgrade the communication and incident recording solutions available to customs staff. It wanted to implement a body worn camera (BWC) system to provide daily recordings and real time viewing capabilities.

The BWC solution was needed to capture video evidence, so the footage could be used to review incidents. BOC also wanted to deploy BWCs at ports throughout the Philippine archipelago to enhance its monitoring activities.

The Results

The PD56X radios are being used by all crisis management, administration, and security personnel within the school, creating a safer, more secure environment for both students and staff at Palmer Trinity, as well as visitors. The school's initial purchase of 34 radios will be supplemented with 10 additional units within the year.

School administrators have implemented daily mandatory communication and utilization protocols, with all technology and facilities personnel using the radios as part of the daily operations. The PD56X are used for simulation purposes and real-life scenarios (i.e. fire drills and lockdowns). All visitors to the school are reported via radios, and school nurses are required to have a radio with them at all times.
